The Statistics and Operations Research (SEIO) Awards -BBVA Foundation 2023 in its fourth edition have awarded five Spanish contributions to the cutting edge of data science, with applications in multiple research areas such as oceanography, astrophysics, cybersecurity, analysis of destruction due to armed conflicts and response to humanitarian crises, he reported. entity.

These awards, as noted by the Foundation, recognize contributions of significant international impact in two disciplines with an increasingly important role in generating knowledge in all areas of science, as well as in the development of technologies, such as artificial intelligence. ‘big data’.

The aim of the awards, as stated in their rules, is to “encourage Spanish researchers in statistics and operations research” and also, by recognizing excellence in these two disciplines, “to promote their projection in society at large”.

In this edition, five works are awarded, the authors of which are researchers at universities and research centers in Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia, Castile, León and Cantabria, and in which scientists from other countries such as the United States, Canada, Belgium and Turkey also collaborate. In addition, award-winning contributions have been published in leading international journals.

As for the prizes, €6,000 was awarded in each of its five categories: “Best methodological contribution to statistics,” “Best methodological contribution to operations research,” “Best applied contribution to statistics,” “Best applied contribution to research.” and “Best Contribution to Statistics and Operations Research Applied to Data Science and Big Data”.

The foundation noted that these awards are given “for excellence in scholarly contributions published in the past five years.” According to the grounds, its authors must be researchers of Spanish nationality, or of another nationality, who have carried out their research work at a university or scientific center in Spain. Likewise, it can also be awarded to researchers of any nationality for contributions developed in collaboration with one or more Spanish researchers.
