Expert in general science competitions: “Go where the problem hurts”

The Executive Director of ANID made recommendations to increase the chances of success in project applications, during his talk with academics and students at UCM.

“The first thing is to talk to those affected by the problem.” In this way, the Executive Director of the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), Francisco Vargas, began talking about the possibilities for successful application of projects, at the Mole Catholic University.

The conference, organized by UCM's Department of Innovation, Development and Technology Transfer, brought together researchers, students and entrepreneurs from the region.

“Go where the problem hurts, because that will allow you to measure, identify and quantify the size of the problem and see how far you can go to the right solution. Another recommendation is to form multidisciplinary teams, because sometimes we tend to work only with similar teams.

Throughout the year, ANID opens about sixty programs and competitions to promote research in Chile. “We are very interested in being present in the regions, because unfortunately the highest quotas for applications and project grants are still the Metropolitan and Biobio regions, which receive between 50 and 60 percent of the allocations,” Vargas said. “Through these conversations we are trying to stimulate application elsewhere.” “.

The event was celebrated by the Director of Innovation, Development and Technology Transfer, Fabiola Loyola, which was chaired by the Campus Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, Hernan Moreira. “We expected to increase the knowledge of our researchers and students regarding the lines and opportunities available to them to develop research, and of course we hope that this will lead to an increase in the number of projects at our university,” he said.
