Zenda Recommended Reading: Science Fiction, by Danielle Raymond

Monday in Zenda. The two narrations are in Spanish. Monday in this case Sci-fiThe second novel by the writer Madrid Daniel Raymond (Madrid, 1983), published by the publishing house Six baralwhich had already hosted, just under three years ago, his first novel: literature. Trained as a playwright and film screenwriter – in 2019 he won the Goya Award for Best Original Screenplay for his work on outside-, Raymond now began to establish himself as a skilled novelist, able to put apparently foreign symbols into contact with each other to reconstruct a universe that, without forgetting its original spaces, is always projecting towards a new place.

The publisher refers to the book in the following terms: “Ximena is thirty years old and studies at film school. There he meets the narrator of this novel. They start going out and sharing wine, trips, conversations, bad movies after dinner, and whatever they read and write.

They go to live together, establish their identities, and talk about the future. But the future comes and the specter of disappointment appears: Is this the person I want to share my life with? Isn't there anyone better out there? Why do we assume that a relationship fails if it doesn't last forever?

Sci-fi It's a love story. There are no alternate futures, spaceships, or time travel in it. Through nods to various genres (romantic comedies, essay films, dramas, fantasy, sci-fi), the narrator performs an autopsy similar to the ones we've all performed post-breakup: a mixture of memory and myth, analysis and pure analysis. Speculation.
