Behind the social networks they use daily lies data science, a field that is still unknown to young people, its main users. To show them up close and through the platforms they use, the business possibilities that are opening up in this field, a European project arrived yesterday at the IES of Infiesto in which the University of Oviedo participates through the Department of Applied Economics. Piloñés is the first center to reach the program, which seeks to awaken vocations – especially among women -, in addition to including more content about data science in school curricula. Young Irene Arellano, who graduated in Mathematics and Physics and holds a Master’s degree in Data Analysis for Business Intelligence from the University of Oviedo, was responsible for bringing knowledge and inspiration for her professional life to thirty first-year Baccalaureate students. An expert in database processing, web tag validation and statistical model development, she works at Merkle Spain, where her mission is to “generate value” from data. In a sharing session, they covered numbers about the users of the major platforms, how pages are placed on Google, algorithms, what are the “cookies” or the different areas involved in data science, with a special focus on the analysis part. . Irene Arellano reminded them that professions such as mathematics and physics are “useful for more than teaching” and stressed that the world of work is constantly evolving. “Nothing is final,” the data analyst said, encouraging students to “not be afraid” of mathematics and to see fields like data science as a “career opportunity.” Regarding choosing their studies, he advised them to choose “something they love but has outlets.” Because if they don’t find work after that, it can be very frustrating.

The session was also attended by the professors from the University of Oviedo responsible for the European project, Ana Vinuela and Esteban Fernández, who highlighted the importance of data science in the social sciences and its impact on “many aspects of life.” They also insisted that “there is work” and encouraged people to avoid “rejecting numbers and mathematics.” The day after the wake up call will be at IES Río Nora in Pola de Cerro.
