The Cuban President conveys his condolences for the helicopter accident victims

HAVANA, January 30 (EFE): Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel sent condolences to the families of the five who died on Friday when a helicopter crashed in the eastern part of the island. “The death of important colleagues in an accident that hurts deeply. Our condolences to their families, friends and the Revolutionary Armed Forces, who joined their ranks with honor,” the president wrote on Twitter. The accident occurred on Friday morning for reasons that are still under investigation and the killing of five crew members of the device belonging to the state-owned Aerogaviota. The plane was moving from Holguín County to Guantanamo and crashed off the ground in Holguín municipality, Mayari, according to local media. The company Aerogaviota, which operates in the tourism sector, is affiliated with the Gaesa trade group, which is operated by the Armed Forces of the Caribbean country and subject to US sanctions. The last plane crash occurred in Cuba in February 2019, when a Soviet-built MIG21 military plane crashed in a rural area of ​​the municipality of Guaira de Milena, in the southwest of the island, without causing casualties. Less than a year ago, on May 18, 2018, the most serious air disaster for Cuban civil aviation in three decades occurred, when a Boeing 737-200 chartered by the Cubana de Aviation to Mexico’s Global Air company crashed minutes later.
