Xi Jinping is ready to cooperate with the United States to “manage their differences”

Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed on Wednesday his readiness to cooperate with the US authorities in an attempt to “manage their differences” and contribute to “common progress and prosperity.” In a message sent on the occasion of the annual ceremony of the National Committee on China-US Relations, Xi stressed the importance of upholding principles such as “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.” He added, “China wants to work together to develop mutual benefits, manage our differences appropriately, and confront global challenges.” Moreover, he emphasized that his goal was to ensure that this would benefit “both countries and the entire world.” In this sense, he described the fact that the United States and China succeeded in pushing this matter forward in a “correct” way, as reported by China’s official Xinhua news agency, as “crucial.” China’s Ambassador to the US Xie Feng, who attended the event, urged “avoiding any conflict” as relations between the two sides appear to be weakening despite there being a strengthening at the diplomatic level. “Conflict between powers cannot be allowed, and the separation of their economies will never succeed,” he said, stressing that stopping the deterioration of bilateral relations is the “common desire” of both parties. On the same Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with California Governor Gavin Newsom during a visit to the Chinese capital, Beijing. Newsom’s trip comes a day before Wang himself travels to US soil, where he intends to pave the way for Xi’s future visit. Hence, during his trip, Wang will meet with Secretary of State Antony Blinken to address “a variety of bilateral, regional and global issues as part of efforts to improve their relations and keep channels of communication open.” According to CNN sources, Wang will also meet with the White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, without a meeting with US President Joe Biden being confirmed at the present time.
