Canada participates in the AmeriCup by defeating Mexico

Leon (Mexico), July 2 (EFE). – The Canadian basketball team defeated host Mexico 83-57 this Sunday, in its first appearance in the 2023 America’s Cup for Women, which is being held in the city of Leon, in central Mexico.

Shay Cooley led the Canadian offense with 19 points, two rebounds and four assists. Sofia Bayan was the highlight for Mexico, with 10 points and five rebounds.

Canada had no contest in the paint against Mexico, earning 40 points, to just 12 of their opponents. In addition, the Canadiens had better aim on field goals and were not forgiving on counterattacks.

With this result, Canada occupied one of the places in the quarter-finals, a battle in which Mexico also participated, which appeared last Saturday in the tournament by defeating the Dominican Republic.

Before, Puerto Rico remained undefeated in the competition by fielding the Dominican Republic with a score of 73-47, which remained winless in its first two games.

Arila Gerantes appeared again with the Puerto Rico national team, scoring 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Cesarina Capelan was the best striker for the Dominican team, with 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Puerto Rico capitalized on its rivals’ losses and was well supported by its substitutes to reach two wins and finish first in Group B, on its way to qualifying for the next round.

Sector B activity will continue Monday with clashes between Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Canada.

The second group also witnessed activity last Sunday, with Brazil’s 90-76 victory over Venezuela, and the two-time defending champion, the United States, 65-56 over Argentina. The activity of this group will resume on Monday, with the Cuba-Venezuela and Brazil-Argentina matches.
