Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted on Monday that Ottawa authorities are considering the possibility of joining the AUKUS coalition, a bloc formed in September 2021 by Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The AUKUS alliance was established with the main goal of supplying Australia with nuclear-powered submarines to ensure its security. Trudeau noted that Ottawa will assess the need to acquire these capabilities to defend its sovereignty in the Arctic.
The Canadian Prime Minister expressed himself in these terms in a statement to the press after the executive branch announced its review of its defense policies, which is now focused on protecting Canadian sovereignty in the north, the Canadian Press reported.
The new roadmap includes spending millions on defence, but does not detail how Canada will reach 2% of gross domestic product, a common NATO goal. Ottawa plans to acquire new submarines, long-range missiles and early warning aircraft.
Although the AUKUS alliance has been pushed to provide nuclear-powered submarines for Australia, another potential key ambition of the agreement is to counter China's influence in the Indo-Pacific region.
