Argentina condemns the United Kingdom’s refusal to talk about the Malvinas Islands

United Nations, October 9 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine Secretary for the Malvinas Islands, Antarctica and the South Atlantic, Guillermo Carmona, today condemned before the United Nations Special Political and Decolonization Committee the United Kingdom’s refusal to resume negotiations on those islands.

During his speech, Carmona affirmed Argentina’s sovereign right over those territories and accused London of committing a flagrant and permanent violation of international laws.

We demand justice. The United Kingdom ignores the mandates of the international community and continues to undertake unilateral actions related to the exploration and exploitation of natural resources. Additionally, it maintains a disproportionate military presence in the South Atlantic, he stated.

He added that the latest thing that happened in this regard was the deployment of the so-called Kosovo Security Forces in the Falkland Islands, which represents the introduction of foreign groups with military capabilities into a disputed area.

He pointed out that his country urges the European nation to put an end to these actions and adhere to United Nations resolutions that call on both parties to sit at the dialogue table.

On the other hand, he pointed out that the United Kingdom, 190 years ago, forcefully occupied the territories that were under the control and jurisdiction of Argentina, expelled the authorities there and implemented measures to introduce British nationals for the purpose of determining the demographic composition. Which would allow it to strengthen its colonial hegemony.

In this way, I violated the integrity of my country and made it difficult for Argentines from the continent to settle. He pointed out that for this reason the principle of self-determination could not be applied in the case of islands.

Argentina ratifies in its Constitution its legitimate and imprescriptible sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands and their corresponding marine and island areas.

The recovery of these territories, while respecting the way of life of their inhabitants and in accordance with international principles and laws, constitutes a permanent and inalienable goal of the people of this nation, as stated in the Magna Carta.
