America’s Abortion Helpline | international

Due to the increasing restrictions on abortion in the United States, many women have had to turn to alternative guidance, such as that provided by a citizen number created specifically for this purpose.

The Abortion and Pregnancy Termination Hotline is a project staffed by 70 volunteer medical professionals who provide advice and guidance to American women who do not wish to continue their pregnancy.

A large percentage of women call having these procedures done at home, it’s illegal in their states. Project co-founder Linda Breen started the line in 2019, when restrictions on reproductive rights were tightening under Donald Trump. Since abortion was abolished last year, calls have skyrocketed.

So far, Linda and her colleagues see about 13 cases over the phone and a similar number of patients they contact via text message. The most frequently asked questions are where to find pills to terminate pregnancy and doubts about their effectiveness, as well as instructions about persistent bleeding and other symptoms. The identity of the people on the other end of the phone remains anonymous.
