Women, Science and Equality – El Periódico Extremadura

This week, at the Plasencia University Center, several women who have achieved important positions in science and at the university shared their insights into the challenges women face in scientific careers. They all advocated for the possibility of getting where they are, sending a message to girls and young men to convince themselves that it is possible and that they are not alone.

But at the same time, they all clearly said that the gender gap still exists today. That means it's possible, yes, but to get there you have to overcome many obstacles that men don't face.

The Deputy Director of Science at the Institute of Astrophysics in Andalusia said: “We have to be better than men to achieve what they have achieved,” and one of the aspects that they all highlighted is that if a large number of women do not reach positions of responsibility, this is due to a lack of reconciliation with life. Family and shared responsibility with the partner.

This means that if society assumed that if a couple wanted to have children, the woman and man could lose their jobs and might need reduced working hours or flexible working hours, there would be no problems. However, it is still believed that in this case, it will be the woman who will accrue more sick leave and will therefore be less productive than the man.

Thus, if girls and young men themselves lack the awareness that a woman can go wherever she wants and that her talent and effort allow her to do so, it is because they have many examples that, when a woman has the desire to start a family, she must give it up if You want to advance in your job. Otherwise she will not be appreciated or she will have to prove doubly that she can do both.

One of the scholars said that the change in mentality and education is the business of everyone, men and women, because no matter what they want, without their cooperation it will not be possible, starting with those who hold senior positions in companies, who are still the majority of men.

Girls and young women need female role models, in science or any other field, who have not had to give up their personal or family lives to achieve their professional goal, and this is still lacking today.
