They are testing a new AI-powered sensor to detect and track people during Science Week

The device is installed at a transport interchange in Madrid

Researcher group Electronic Systems and Engineering Division Group The test will be conducted from UPCT during Science and Technology Week (SeCyT), which will be held this weekend in Murcia, developed a new sensor with artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and track people. The developed device will be used to measure the number of people in public places.

The tests will be carried out on a model bus equipped with AI-powered sensors installed at one of the UPCT platforms in El Malecón, where SeCyT is being held. When passing under the sensor, the device will detect the person and track their exit.

Several units of this device are being installed at the Moncloa transport interchange in Madrid and on Alsa buses that arrive at this place in the capital to detect the flow of citizens, says the responsible researcher at UPCT. pedro c. Navarro.

Moncloa is the oldest intersection in Madrid and currently the most widely used. It is the “new generation” intersection that manages the largest number of travelers in the Community of Madrid, with 32 million annually and an average of 124,000 people daily.

The possibility of knowing the occupancy of installed buses in real time will facilitate the adjustment of public transport supply to real demand. This translates into a significant reduction in carbon footprint and improved public transport travel.

Navarro points out that smart mobility allows public transportation to be dynamically adapted to the needs of future cities. It is useful to adapt city traffic to real needs.

This project is titled “Metropolis”. “Mobility in the City of the Future” (PLEC2021-007609), is funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation with European Next Generation Funding and is developed by researchers from UP4, an alliance of the country’s four polytechnic universities.

UPCT will be present at SeCyT with more than 30 scientific and technological publishing activities, workshops and exhibitions related to the fields of study taught at the university and the projects carried out by its researchers.
