17 states in the United States in 16 regions of the country are still battling for a place for the top soccer competition.
FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, dropped its bid to host the World Cup in 2026, and the Washington area merged its campaign with M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
The combined show will include a fan festival on the National Mall in the District of Columbia, the US capital’s National Monuments Park.
FedEx Field, which opened in 1997, was one of the stadiums that was part of the initial proposal for 2017. It hosted matches in the 1999 Women’s World Cup. The RFK Stadium in the capital hosted World Cup matches. Men’s World in 1994 is set to be demolished.
17 US states in 16 regions of the country are still battling for a place for the World Cup, including the Los Angeles area that has submitted proposals for both SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, the stadium where the World Cup final was played, the Cup World 1994.
Three cities in Canada and three other cities in Mexico aspire to host the matches. FIFA believes that the selected stadiums will be announced by mid-May.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first with 48 teams and the first with three co-hosts. FIFA selected the show as a common venue in June 2018.
Sixty matches will be played in the United States, including all quarter-final matches onwards. Canada and Mexico host 10 matches each.
