Gabriel Alarcón, appointed Managing Director of Sener Group

Gabriel Alarcón has been appointed General Manager of the entire Sener Group. Alarcón, who until now held the position of General Manager of the Engineering Region, will be responsible, together with the CEO, for the global strategy of the Sener Group, which currently employs more than 3,000 highly qualified professionals around the world. His appointment is due to the group’s need to strengthen its corporate structure, given the organic and inorganic growth achieved by Sener in recent years. In this way, from his new position, Gabriel Alarcón will seek to promote the use of synergies between the different areas of Sener; Aerospace & Defence, Mobility, Energy, Renewable Investments, Advanced Utilities – which includes the recently acquired Quark – and Marine or Digital.

In his previous phase as General Manager of Engineering, the company reorganized the transportation and energy business into subsidiaries; The acquisition of Tactix in Australia and Quark in Spain and the strategic reorientation of the energy business, among other initiatives. Previously, he coordinated the restructuring of the engineering field, which included the launch of the Mobility, Energy and Innovation technology units. Their work has been essential to renew and strengthen the Group’s culture of innovation and digitalization.

Siner faces an ambitious strategic plan for 2025, which foresees significant growth for the group, both in its existing businesses and in new technology-based areas. This growth will be supported by strong investment in people, technological innovation and business acquisitions. The current order book exceeds €1 billion, a record across all core businesses, and includes a wide range of international projects.

Gabriel Alarcón began his career at Sener in 1995. Since then, except for a pause at ALSTOM, he has held various positions of responsibility in the Sener Group, in the areas of technical, project management, engineering management and general management, in sectors of great importance. Technological component, innovation and sustainability. Among others, he was General Manager of Engineering and Director of Sener in Catalonia. He obtained his PhD in Industrial Engineering in Mechanics from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and his postgraduate degree in the Public Administration Program (PDG) from the IESE Business School.

Sener is strengthening its transversal model to meet future technological challenges

This appointment seeks to reinforce one of the Group’s distinctive features: the high level of diversification and specialization in heterogeneous and technologically demanding areas. The use of synergies between the different areas of Sener has been a distinguishing factor in the history of the company, which was founded in 1956 (being the first engineering company registered in Spain), as a marine technical office.

Today, Sener is present on five continents, with offices and innovation centers in 21 countries. Throughout its history, it has maintained its commitment to proposing innovative solutions, searching for new markets and addressing the most complex technical challenges of its customers. Today, it is present in the aerospace, defense, mobility and transport infrastructure markets, advanced facilities for data centres, energy and renewables enhancement, and digital, marine and diagnostic technology solutions for laboratories.

This diversification, in particular, is one of Sener’s distinctive elements, the element that allows it to face complex challenges and benefit from mutual knowledge in different fields. For example, its extensive experience in the energy and renewable fields will allow it to help its clients solve one of the challenges that will define the roadmap of the digital economy: the search for greater energy efficiency in data centers, complex and essential infrastructures in the new production model, with rising consumption.

Commitment to innovation and technological cutting edge

Another distinctive feature of Sener, which Alarcón will work to strengthen in his new role, is a culture of innovation. Last year, the company invested more than $16 million in R&D, while nearly a third of employees were involved in R&D projects, as presented during the V Sener Innovation Forum, its bi-annual meeting on the future of innovation, which brought together more Of 200 professionals in October in Bilbao.

As Alarcón explained during the event, one of the constants in the engineering sector is the importance of technological disruption. To be competitive, companies like Sener must stay at the technological forefront in very challenging areas. For this reason, during the V Innovation Forum, the company held a ceremony honoring its Chief Technical Engineer, or CTE. This position, awarded by Sener every two years, celebrates technical excellence in various fields of knowledge. Specifically, Sener honored nine of its engineers as CTEs for their outstanding knowledge in their areas of activity: aerospace mechanisms, railways, geotechnical and tunneling, acoustics, noise and vibration, energy, chemical processes, installations and tunnel safety, and electronic engineering. This recognition, in addition to the investment in time and resources made by Sener, is an example of the group’s culture of innovation, which, along with the use of synergies between different areas, will be two of Alarcón’s goals in his new position.

REM Light Rail, Canada:

Sener is participating as an independent verification engineer on the recently opened REM of Montreal, the city’s new automated light rail line.

The fourth bridge over the Panama Canal:

The group was awarded the design for this technically complex project, following the success of the suspension bridge in Cebu, in the Philippines, where Sener was the reference engineering within the design consortium.

Gateway Station, Netherlands:

Sener Company is among the companies selected to design and build the fourth tank to store liquefied natural gas at the terminal and increase its capacity to regasify it.

HiveWind offshore wind platform:

Sener in collaboration with Nervión Naval-Offshore has developed an innovative semi-submersible floating steel platform for offshore wind turbines with capacities exceeding 15 MW.

Petronor Refinery Electrolyzer (Moskys):

Repsol recently inaugurated a 2.5 MW electrolyser manufactured by Sener and John Cockerill, which produces the first renewable hydrogen in the Basque Country and was the first to be manufactured in Spain.
