Bishop Rolando Alvarez is released from prison

(Agencies / Catholic InformationBishop Alvarez’s release was held in the strictest confidence. According to various diplomatic sources consulted, there is a connection between the Vatican, the Episcopal Conference, and the dictatorial regime of Ortega and Murillo. However, there was a quandary regarding the eventual removal of the Catholic bishop.

This situation led to “great tension and difficulty,” especially after the news was leaked and Alvarez’s reluctance to leave Nicaragua, according to the same sources. The secrecy is such that the family of the Bishop of Matagalpa does not know his whereabouts.

The highest authority in Alvarez’s reporting is Pope Francis, and the sources explain that only an order from the Pope could resolve the situation and prompt the bishop to leave Nicaragua. However, it is not yet known whether the Pope issued instructions similar to those he gave to the Auxiliary Bishop of Managua, Silvio Páez, who was forced into exile in April 2019.

Opposition leader Félix Maradiaga confirmed that the bishop “is no longer in the detention center… Reliable and well-informed sources have unofficially stated that Monsignor Rolando Alvarez could be expelled from Nicaragua in the next few hours, perhaps tomorrow.”

It must be remembered that the Brazilian President, Lula da Silva, promised to mediate for the release of the bishop after he had recently been received by the Pope.
