The United States requested the extradition of Assange, who faces a 175-year prison sentence in that country for publishing more than 700,000 secret documents on American military and diplomatic activities, especially with regard to Iraq and Afghanistan, since 2010.

“Do the right thing, drop the charges,” Assange's wife, Stella, said on Channel X in response to Biden's comments.

She had previously said that Assange's mental and physical health was deteriorating and that her husband would “die” if he was sent to the United States.

For Assange's supporters, he has exposed wrongdoing in the US military, and his legal battle represents a fight for press freedom. For its part, Washington says that with its leaks it put people's lives at risk by publishing documents that included the names of intelligence sources.

WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Kristin Hrafnsson called for a “political solution” to Assange's plight on Wednesday as there was a demonstration of support in central London on the eve of the fifth anniversary of his arrest.

“This is the kind of case that should never have been started in the first place,” Hrafnsson said during the protest, adding that the time Assange spent in Belmarsh prison in southeast London was “excessive, excessive and brutal.”
