US President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that his administration will invest $100 million through projects to enhance cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
During his speech at a virtual summit between the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Biden described the US relationship and the partnership as “vital,” which he said are essential to keeping the Indo-Pacific region free and open.
Biden promised to deepen cooperation and search for new ways of dialogue at the ministerial level, as well as investing “in our country” and promoting “comprehensive prosperity in this sensitive region.”
The US president said that ASEAN is a “central regional structure for the Indo-Pacific” and that the United States is committed to the centrality of the partnership.
“It is an essential pillar of maintaining the resilience, prosperity, and security of our common region,” Biden added.

The White House, prior to the president’s speech, had stated that the United States would allocate up to $102 million in new initiatives to expand the partnership between the country and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The spending will cover projects in health, climate change and the economy, among others.
