Mexico City: Upon obtaining permanent residency, a person from another country can stay in Canada for several years. By 2021, Canada plans to receive about 401,000 permanent residents.
There are several ways to obtain residency, through the immigration programs located in Canada. For example, you can get permission if you go to study in that country, to work, and even if you have relatives who have Canadian citizenship.
There is also a government-assisted refugee program, where you can submit an asylum application for residency. However, this is a process that must be reviewed and approved by the Immigration and Refugee Board to determine the case.
According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, some of the benefits of getting a permanent residence card are:
- Obtaining most of the social benefits for citizens, such as health care coverage.
- Being able to live, work or study anywhere in Kanda.
- You have the option to apply for Canadian citizenship.
- Be protected under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- Also, residents are required to pay taxes and abide by Canadian laws at both the federal and local levels.
What are the things that Canada residents cannot do?
- Vote and run for political office.
- Work in jobs that require a high level security clearance.
Maintaining permanent resident status requires that you have been in Canada for at least 730 days in the past five years, although it does not.
