UK: Peel Ports Group expands steel terminal due to growth in demand

Port peel set It will expand its steel and metals plant in response to strong growth in customer demand in Port of Liverpool. The UK’s second-largest port operator has begun construction of the expanded 20,000 square foot warehouse at North 3 Canada Quay in 2023.

The group’s investment comes as the Port of Liverpool enjoyed one of its busiest months for steel volumes in September, with port and dock staff at Birkenhead handling more than 75,000 tonnes.

It is the busiest month for steel at the port in more than two years, with 93,000 tonnes handled at the site in July 2021.

An initial 8,000 sq ft of newly created warehouse space has already been put into use, and the second phase of construction is currently underway to build an additional 12,000 sq ft of the terminal which will be completed in December.

Phil Hall, Mersey Ports Director at Peel Ports Group, He said: “We are very pleased to witness such an increase in demand for steel handling at our port in recent months. This positive news has prompted us to choose to increase the size of our facilities, offering customers the possibility of expanding their capacity, in addition to improving our handling facilities at the port.

He added: “Given the benefits of the Port of Liverpool’s central location and proximity to UK manufacturing sites, we believe this will be a very important and worthwhile investment.”

The location now includes 280,000 square feet of indoor storage space, as well as 100,000 square feet of exterior footage. Its total production capacity now amounts to more than 600 thousand tons annually.

The facility was the UK’s first fully automated steel terminal following a £9 million upgrade in 2016.
