Thousands of migrants arrive in the UK

United kingdom. They estimated the number of migrants who have arrived in the country so far this year after crossing the English Channel at more than a thousand, of whom more than 300 made this crossing last weekend. The British Home Office recorded the arrival of about 112 migrants on two boats on Saturday, while five others arrived from France on Sunday, carrying 276 migrants.

Since the beginning of the year, the government has notified 1,057 such arrivals. The authorities set a record on January 17 when 358 people crossed the English Channel in one day. These crossings are occurring at a time when British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is calling for the country's immigration policy to be strengthened “urgently” and with the aim of launching deportation flights to Rwanda as soon as possible – a measure that has now been paralyzed by justice.

The government's initiative sparked controversy, but was ultimately supported by the House of Commons and is expected to also be approved in the House of Lords. The discussion takes place in a context in which the number of irregular crossings of the English Channel has increased significantly, reaching 45,755 cases in 2022, a significant increase from the 299 cases recorded in 2018.
