They are conducting research at the Canadian rehabilitation farm Escuintla

Guatemala City, March 16. (Sing).- As part of the anti-extortion strategy, investigators from the National Division Against Criminal Development of Gangs (DIPANDA) of the National Civil Police (PNC) carried out an operation at the Canadian Rehabilitation Farm, located in Escuintla.

The aim of this measure was to dismantle potential communications networks used by criminal groups from within the penal institution.

During the inspection, a number of devices were seized:

  • 8 mobile phones
  • 3 satellite signal generators
  • 2 routers
  • Various network cables
  • Phone chargers
  • 1 modem.

These findings indicate the existence of a secret communications network that could be used to commit extortion and other crimes from within the rehabilitation center, and is already being investigated.

Government commitment

Likewise, the Government of Guatemala affirmed its commitment to combating extortion, a criminal practice that seriously affects the security and well-being of the population.

It is recognized that many of these criminal activities originate within prisons, where inmates maintain their communications with the outside world through unauthorized communication devices.

All seized materials will be subject to comprehensive analysis by the competent authorities. Therefore, this process will identify potential links between detainees and criminal networks active outside prison facilities.

It is expected that the results obtained from this analysis will contribute significantly to advancing ongoing investigations and dismantling these criminal structures.

Moreover, within the framework of this administration, it has been emphasized that crime will not be tolerated in any form. The Government is determined to address the root causes of crime and take effective measures to prevent and combat criminal activity in all its manifestations.
