The dictatorship appoints Lautaro Sandino as “chargé d'affaires” in the United States

On Thursday, March 7, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega officially announced the appointment of Mauricio Lautaro Sandino Montes as Chargé d'Affairs at the Nicaraguan Embassy in Washington, D.C., in the United States.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained in a press release that Sandino has been accredited to the US State Department since February 16.

The Nicaraguan embassy has been decapitated since the beginning of February 2024, when the Ortega regime retired Permanent Ambassador Francisco Campbell and appointed in his place Harold Delgado with the rank of Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs.

No ambassador

Sandino's official appointment took place a month after Campbell's retirement, although his consular duties began in mid-February. Since Campbell's retirement, no ambassador has been appointed, only Minister Chancellor Harold Delgado, and now Sandino acting.

In the same press release, the Ortega regime confirmed that in Nicaragua, Kevin M. O'Reilly has been approved as Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Government since June 2023.

Lautaro Sandino has extensive experience in Nicaraguan diplomacy, having served as Nicaraguan Ambassador to the European Union for 10 years, from 2010 to 2020. At the same time, he headed embassies in Belgium (2010-2020), Poland (2019), and Italy. Czech Republic (2012-2013) and Representative to UNESCO from 2011 to 2016.
