London, March 14 (EFE) – British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Thursday, ruled out the possibility of holding general elections in the United Kingdom on May 2, coinciding with the celebration of local elections in the country.
Putting an end to ongoing speculation that this date was likely, the Conservative leader explained today in an interview with British television channel ITV that “there will be no general election on that day.”
The head of the executive branch of the aforementioned network commented: “In a few weeks, we will have elections for police commissioners, local councils and mayors across the country. These are important elections.”
“When there is a general election, it is the election that matters,” Sunak added.
The United Kingdom must hold its next general elections before the end of January 2025, and in recent weeks persistent rumors have spread that the call to the polls will coincide with the date of the local elections in this country.
The Conservative leader had also suggested earlier today that a general election was likely to be held in the second half of 2024, at a date yet to be announced.
