Mexico above the United States in the World Baseball Rankings | Sports XEU

The World Baseball Baseball Confederation (WBSC) today announced the updated World Baseball Men’s Rankings, following the conclusion of two of the world’s largest continental multi-sport events: the Asian Games and the Pan American Games. Mexico overtook the United States on the list after winning a bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, reaching its highest position in the rankings.

Mexico earned 319 bronze medal points in baseball competition at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, enough to finish second in the standings for the first time with 4,709 points and move the United States into third place (4,492). Japan continues to lead with 5,572 points.

The Pan American Games also awarded important points to Panama and Colombia, which gained two places and now sit in 10th and 13th places, respectively. Panama earned 264 points as a result of its fourth-place finish in Santiago, while Colombia added 430 points thanks to its historic gold medal campaign.

Chile, host of the Pan American Games, returned to the rankings again 10 months after losing all its points on December 31, 2022. The 43 points it obtained in the Pan American Games allowed it to enter 50th place in the world. Brazil won the silver medal in Santiago and replaced China in 23rd place in the world.

Asian teams received points for their exploits at the Asian Games, but they also saw points removed from the 2019 Asian Championship, and thus this did not change the positions of the three superpowers, with Japan and Korea in fourth place and Chinese Taipei in fifth place. They remain in the same position. The Philippines, No. 32, Hong Kong, and China, No. 37, lost 58 and 43 points, respectively, down two places and five points.

The total number of baseball programs ranked is 80.
