Dive Medical: Dive Medical is a company that helps detect health problems through the eyes a job

Victoria Puyo, a pediatric ophthalmologist at Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza, realized 10 years ago that one of the main obstacles she faced when performing medical examination was the difficulty of obtaining reliable answers from children and patients with cognitive problems. To address this problem, this professional, in collaboration with two computer engineering doctors, launched Dive Medical, a company born after five years of research in order to improve visual assessment for users. The project was developed with the help of the University of Zaragoza and the Aragon Health Research Institute, and its purpose is to help pediatricians and ophthalmologists make a quick and effective diagnosis. The technology developed by Dive Medical is suitable for all types of patients and, to a greater extent, for those who cannot answer the questions asked during the consultation.

The company has developed a tool called Eye tracker, which is integrated into a tablet, which captures at all times the location of the patient's pupil to measure visual acuity, contrast sensitivity or oculomotor control. They say that artificial intelligence helps them in the task of obtaining patient data, and providing an effective and economical visual examination.

This Aragonese company, which has 10 employees, explores visual function in babies up to six months old. “With this eye tracker, a lot of work is offloaded to the doctor, as the patient arrives with all the tests performed at the consultation,” says Marta Ortin, CTO.

Two years ago, Huawei awarded Dive Medical with a Corporate Responsibility Award and selected it for product development. The Chinese company funded an international project in which this tool was tested with more than 6,000 people from countries such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Mexico.

Currently, through this system, Dive Medical is developing new ophthalmology tests to detect diseases such as autism. This innovative system is located in hospitals in Madrid, Barcelona or Zaragoza. Ortin says the goal for this year is to use this system in more parts of Spain and Europe.

This project is funded by public and private aid, although it is not profitable at the present time. They have received up to 1.9 million in public assistance so far. Regarding income, the economic forecast at the end of 2023 was 140 thousand euros, 44 thousand less than what they earned in the previous year. “Until that year, invoices came from influential projects sponsored by Huawei to conduct visual inspection in different countries.”

They are optimistic about the future as they have just signed their first medical device distribution contract to boost sales. Looking forward to this year, Dive Medical's goal is to further consolidate its position in the health business by hiring 3,000 people to measure the efficiency of visual examination of patients mainly in Zaragoza, Germany and Finland.
