Croatia takes advantage of Italy in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup | Sports

Turin, Italy (AFP) – Borna Gogo gave Croatia the first lead over Italy in the Davis Cup quarter-finals by beating Lorenzo 7-6 (2) 2-6 6-2 on Monday, and Sonego scored its first singles point.

2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic faced Yannick Sener, the great Italian promise of 20 years, in his second duel in Turin.

“We were clear that one of the singles fencers had to be won. We are sure of the doubles point,” Gogo said.

Spread across three European cities, the final stage of the Davis Cup is settled in a series of top three matches – two singles matches and one doubles match – on the indoor hard surfaces.

The difference in ranking between Gojo and Sonego is stark. Gojo is 252 steps below Sonego, number 27 in the ATP rating.

Gojo recovered from a 4-1 reversal in the first set to force the tiebreak. Sunego responded in the second set, but his mistakes continued in the third set and he wasted three break points in the seventh game.

The other quarter-final crosses are: Great Britain and Germany; Serbia- Kazakhstan; Russia and Sweden.

Both the semi-finals and the final will take place in Madrid.
