On September 21, 2023, Secretary of State Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Cham Sonry, Cambodian International Cooperation Officer, received a courtesy visit from Mr. David Verbiowski, Chargé d’Affaires of the Canadian Embassy in Phnom Penh.The two sides noted with satisfaction the good relations between Cambodia and Canada and discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, including mine clearance, peacekeeping operations, education, trade and tourism.

The foreign minister referred to the bilateral meeting between Samdek Techo Hun Sen, then Prime Minister of Cambodia, and Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, during which the two leaders discussed Canada’s assistance in clearing mines in Cambodia. The Prime Minister renewed Cambodia’s call on Canada to contribute to helping the country achieve the goal of “Mine-Free Cambodia 2025.”
The two sides exchanged opinions on accelerating the process of establishing bilateral consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries to serve as a good place to explore areas of cooperation to achieve the common interests of the two countries.

Within the framework of ASEAN, and appraising Canada’s active commitment, the Foreign Minister expressed his sincere congratulations on the upgrade of ASEAN-Canada relations to a strategic partnership, which officially began in September this year. David Verbiowski expressed his deep appreciation for Cambodia’s strong support in this process. The Foreign Minister and Chargé d’Affaires expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the FTA negotiations between ASEAN and Canada.
