A columnist for the Washington Post named Max Boot defended the courage of recently-deceased ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi after Trump called him a “coward”.
The opinion piece published by the Post argued that al-Baghdadi had shown courage when he killed himself along with 3 of his children using a suicide vest in a tunnel.
“The assertion that al-Baghdadi died as a coward was, in any case, contradicted by the fact that, rather than be captured, he blew himself up.”
President Donald Trump has disparaged the ISIS leader ever since announcing his death on Sunday morning. Trump said al-Baghdadi “died like a dog” and “like a coward”.
While Boot’s assertion definitely has the same kind of feel as an ISIS propaganda piece, it is not anything new for the “Never-Trump” writer.
Max Boot, a notorious anti-Trump writer, once said he would “sooner vote for Josef Stalin than he would vote for Donald Trump.” He claims to be a conservative and defined his politics in a 2017 opinion piece he wrote for Foreign Policy:
“I am socially liberal: I am pro-LGBTQ rights, pro-abortion rights, pro-immigration. I am fiscally conservative: I think we need to reduce the deficit and get entitlement spending under control. I am pro-environment: I think that climate change is a major threat that we need to address. I am pro-free trade: I think we should be concluding new trade treaties rather than pulling out of old ones. “
“I am strong on defense: I think we need to beef up our military to cope with multiple enemies. And I am very much in favor of America acting as a world leader: I believe it is in our own self-interest to promote and defend freedom and free markets as we have been doing in one form or another since at least 1898.”
Boot was not alone in his attacks against the President. Many Democrats and leftists have asserted that Trump mishandled the killing of Baghdadi despite zero Americans dying in the raid.
Barack Obama’s former Joint Chief James Winnefeld told reporters on Sunday that the Navy SEALs had shown the “respect due under Islam” to Osama Bin Laden’s body after his death despite having killed thousands of US citizens. He asserted that President Trump should have done the same for ISIS terror leader al-Baghdadi.
