Verstappen takes first place in Canada

Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), the outstanding leader in the 2023 Formula One World Championship, will start first on Sunday at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The same race takes place at the legendary Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, where Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) will face the eighth race of the year from third place on the grid.

Verstappen secured his 25th Formula One pole position on Saturday (his fifth of the year) by dominating a qualifying session marked by rain.

For his part, Alonso, who ranks third in the competition, 71 points behind Verstappen, will start from the second row.

Next to Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), the “record man” for the first category.

The other Mercedes, also the car of Englishman George Russell, starts from fifth place, alongside Frenchman Esteban Ocon (Alpine), from the third row.

Englishman Lando Norris (McLaren) finished seventh in a very complex qualifier. That another Spaniard, Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) – who is being investigated for a possible violation during Q2, where he could have impeded Frenchman Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and who, for this reason, could be penalized – finished eighth.
