UEFA awards the 2028 European Championship to the United Kingdom and Ireland

UEFA decided on Tuesday the future of the national team’s major continental tournament for the next decade: the United Kingdom and Ireland will organize Euro 2028, while the unusual collaboration between Italy and Turkey has been selected for 2032.

The final selection of stadiums by UEFA’s executive committee left no losers after Italy and Turkey, once rivals, joined in a bid to align in July.

This agreement took Turkey out of the battle to organize Euro 2028, as the nomination made up of the five neighboring associations – England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – had long been favoured.

Italy looked like the winner of the 2032 World Cup despite doubts over its ability to finish the massive project on time to build and renovate the stadiums needed for the 24-nation, 51-match tournament.

UEFA stabilizes the organization if Italy and Turkey each contribute just five stadiums, although its own rules stipulate that only neighboring member associations can propose joint nominations.

Rome and Istanbul are about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) apart across the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas, and flights between the two capitals take more than two hours.
