The Photographer of the Year award, the highest award, was given to Frenchman Laurent Ballesta, for his photography Limulus Polyphemus Or horseshoe crab, a type of prehistoric marine arthropod. It is considered a living fossil, as its presence on the planet dates back several million years.
Another of the most important awards is the photojournalism award. This year it was won by Mexican Fernando Constantino Martinez, who previously won an award in this competition last year. In his image, the fragmentation of the ecosystem caused by the construction of a section of railway that the Mexican government will install to connect tourist destinations in Quintana Roo is clearly visible.
