The United Nations warns that fuel supplies in Gaza will run out within three days

A senior official has warned that UN fuel supplies in Gaza will run out within three days, stressing the need to allow supplies into the besieged enclave.

“Within three days, UNRWA will run out of fuel, which is critical to our humanitarian response throughout the Gaza Strip,” Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East, said in a statement. ).

“Without fuel, there would be no water, there would be no functioning hospitals or bakeries. Without fuel, aid would not reach the many civilians who need it most. Without fuel, there would be no humanitarian aid.”

Egyptian border authorities said that 20 aid trucks were able to cross the Rafah crossing from Egypt into Gaza on Saturday, delivering food, water, medicines and medical supplies, but not fuel.

Lazzarini stressed that, as “the largest humanitarian actor in the Gaza Strip,” without fuel, UNRWA cannot “help the people of Gaza, whose needs are increasing by the hour.”

He added, “UNRWA currently hosts more than half a million people out of a million displaced people throughout the Gaza Strip.”

Lazzarini continued: “I call on all parties and those who have influence over them to immediately allow the supply of fuel to Gaza and to ensure that fuel is used strictly to avoid the collapse of the humanitarian response.”

Although Saturday’s convoy to Gaza was welcomed, he stressed that the supplies delivered were “far from being sufficient” and stressed that “to be meaningful, Gaza needs a continuous and expanded humanitarian supply line.”
