Netflix is ​​taking a risk in sports: it has acquired the rights to WWE

Through an official statement, Netflix announced its entry into the field of sports broadcasting with a strong investment of US$5 billion to compete with Apple+ and Amazon Prime Video, which already own MLS, MLB, and NFL streaming services.

The fans of WWEa legendary wrestling series that is internationally renowned for its shows, was surprised after the announcement, which represents a strong entry into the world of sports through the platform that had until now focused on series, films and documentaries.

The agreement is scheduled to begin in January 2025 and extend for the next ten years, according to official information. Netflix will have the streaming rights to all WWE events, including Raw and Smackdown, as well as its main events: WrestleMania, Royal Rumble, SummerSlam and others.

“This represents a major programming change, as Raw leaves linear television for the first time since its inception 31 years ago,” the statement read.

“WWE’s award-winning documentaries, original series and upcoming projects will also be available on Netflix internationally starting in 2025,” it adds.

The signal will initially be available in the United States, Canada, Latin America and the United Kingdom, but gradual global expansion is expected.
