Mexico accepts US petition over workers' rights at its Caterpillar subsidiary

Mexico's government on Sunday acknowledged the US request to review the absence of violations of Mexican workers' rights at Caterpillar's Modified Technology plant, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas.

The Government of Mexico stated in a statement that the review request is included within the framework of the Rapid Response Action Mechanism included in the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (TMEC).

This announcement comes after a complaint filed by the Independent Union of Industrial and Service Workers (Snitis) against freedom of organization and collective representation.

In addition, they condemned the unjustified dismissal of a worker in retaliation for his independent union organizing activities and began a strike that lasted more than a month.

Upon acceptance of the aforementioned request, submitted by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the Mexican Government, through the Ministers of Economy, Labor and Welfare, will have a period of 37 days to conduct an internal review that will determine the presence or absence of denial of the rights of Mexican workers.

“The Government of Mexico reiterates its commitment to the effective implementation of labor legislation, as well as the relevant provisions set forth in the USMCA, thus ensuring compliance and protecting the collective rights of the country’s workers,” the Mexican government said. Evie
