Recommended series on Netflix, HBO, and more: only the best

Even if you’ve never read one of Mick Heron’s bestselling spy novels, slow horseswill win you over instantly with its cast of misfits, brought to life by Jack Lowden, Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.

It’s a deep British version of the world of intelligence, but not in a Bond way. Because instead of exotic destinations, you’ll see people drowning their sorrows in a nearby bar after work. That’s not to say it lacks drama – there’s plenty of action amidst all the biting commentary – but it’s Buzz Doo Doo Oldman and Scott Thomas that makes it one of the must-haves. The best TV series to watch this Christmas – Kerry McDermott.

worth watching The bear Just to drool over Jeremy Allen White (Carmi) and his collection of Levi’s booze? Arguably so, but there’s a lot to love about Christopher Storer’s Chicago-set series: the revival of Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Richie Jeremovich; It’s all about the dynamic between Ayo Edebiri’s Sydney character and Liza Colón-Zayas’ Tina, as well as Chef Matty Matheson’s appearance as the down-on-his-luck handyman – HM.

mood

Nicole Leakey’s riveting six-part series begins with a bang: Our heroine, Sasha (played by the author herself), a 25-year-old aspiring singer, struts down a London street, singing arias about love. Then, she quickly snaps back to reality: her boyfriend has dumped her, her mom needs her to get out of the house, and she has to find a way to make money while she waits for her big break. Entering his life is Carly (Lara Beck), a woman from the North whom he meets through friends, who is an influencer by day and a cam girl by night. Running out of options, Sasha moves in with her and joins partying, just cheerleaders, and sugar daddies, before embarking on an ill-fated business trip. The tone goes from exciting to haunting, from cheerful to anxious, but what’s striking throughout is the show’s copious sympathy and lack of judgment. We fall in love with Sasha as we get to know her, through flashbacks to a difficult childhood, surreal settings, and irreverent original songs, including an office sociopath who plays a nauseatingly worth listening to – Radhika Seth.
