The season is barely in the rearview mirror and the Giants have already made a significant signature to propel them into the New Year.
Patrick Graham, the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach who won cheers from his players and denied him points for cross fouls, is not going anywhere. He signed the contract extension and announced Tuesday night that Graham had decided not to consider major training opportunities for 2021.
Just one day after the shooting, Adam Gas reached the Giants, He requests permission to interview Graham For the vacancy in the field of training. There are five more openings and Graham probably attracted another interest. Graham has closed all inquiries and will return for the second season to consolidate what was far and away the strongest unit in the team.
Graham, the moderator for just two years – he ran the show in Miami for the Dolphins in 2019 – was seen as a long-running candidate for a head coach, but so was Joe Judge when he emerged out of nowhere apparently to get the Giants a job a year ago. All it takes is one team to fall in love.
A team has already fallen in love with Graham and this team must keep the relationship going.
Now it will be easier to find Pat, ” full-back Blake Martinez tweeted after seeing the news about Graham’s survival.
Earlier in the day, Martinez wasn’t upset, and he was contemplating the possibility of Graham losing to another team.
“It’s kind of that sweet and bitter thing,” Martinez said. “I’m like,” Okay, pat. “I’m kind of like that fifth clinger girlfriend. I’m like,” You’re not allowed to leave me. ” I will find you. ‘ But no, I’m excited about it. He’s a very smart coach and a really great coach and I’m happy for him. ”
If Graham had an official fan club, Martinez would be the president, cashier, and recruiting head. They worked together at Green Bay in 2018 and Graham was a firm believer that Martinez could be the focus of defense, and is pushing for his signature to a free agency. Martinez finished third in the NFL with 151 tackles and is a staple in the giants’ defense.
Logan Ryan, a veteran safety expert whose versatility allowed Graham to be used in a variety of roles, calls Graham “black Picasso.”
The Giants advanced 6-10 and carried them a defense that ranked 12th in the NFL overall standings and improved from 30th in 2019 to ninth in scoring defensive goals, allowing 22.3 points per game. The Giants were the second-best league in the red zone defense. Despite not having a terrifying spur, Graham managed to rank 40 bags, tying for 12th place in the league.
Graham was the Giants’ defensive line coach in 2016 and 2017, hired by Ben MacAdoo. Graham’s character has surfaced this season as possibly the most reliable soundboard for first-year coach Joe Judge.
Graham said he explains who is the closest ally in training with this: “When we go to the group, who do I have dinner with?” Always, he’s with Judge, who worked with Graham in New England on Bill Belichick.
“I am drawn to people who are better than me,” said Graham.
Last week, while preparing for the season finale against the Cowboys, Graham was asked about your “defense”. He did not let that slip. He said, “Our defense.” No ego issue with Graham, an Ivy League producer prone to correcting anyone who says they have played at Yale. “I was on the Yale team,” he says.
The Giants wanted to keep him on their team, although of course the judge wouldn’t stand in anyone’s way.
“I might be expecting a number of requests from many of our coaches throughout this season,” Judge said. We’ll deal with that internally as soon as it appears. ”
The Giants dealt with it internally by sweetening and expanding the Graham Deal. The Chargers have requested permission to speak with attack coordinator Jason Jarrett about their head coach opening.
For now, any Graham’s coaching aspirations will be pushed forward into the future.
Corner back James Bradbury said: “I think he will do a good job.” “Coach Graham is a very smart guy. I know he went to Ivy League school too. His footballing knowledge, his soccer IQ, is higher than a lot of players I’ve been around. I hope the best for him if that happens. I think he’d be a good candidate.”
No longer a candidate. The giants took care of that.
