AI language models can influence cognition in science

Emerging AI technologies are getting closer to perfection by performing intelligent searches from data. They also do translations, are well-written and fluently written, but these language models laden with AI still make mistakes, which could change the way science is done.

Machine learning algorithms that generate fluid language from massive amounts of text can change the way science is done. It’s not necessarily for the best, said Shupita Parthasarathy, a specialist in managing emerging technologies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Parthasarathy and his team of researchers are trying to anticipate the societal impacts of emerging AI technologies called Long Language Models (LLMs).

This can produce surprisingly persuasive prose, translate between languages, answer questions, and even produce code. The companies that created it, including Google, Facebook, and Microsoft, aim to use it in chatbots. And in search engines, summarizing documents, says a report published in temper nature.

Parthasarathy commented that an LLM can enhance efforts to understand complex research. But they can also deepen the public’s skepticism about the science.

In an interview with the science publication, Shobita Parthasarathy referred to AI language models. He said he was confident that “I originally believed that LLM could have empowering and democratizing effects. It is easy for scientists to claim that they are smart and realize that LLMs are useful but imperfect tools. However, this type of tool can narrow your field of view and it can be hard to tell when an LLM is wrong about something.

Useful techniques in the humanities

The expert stated that comprehensive linguistic models of AI could be useful in digital humanities and in literature. For example, to summarize what a historical text says about a particular topic. When discussing intensive language models of AI, Parthasarathy predicted that some people would use LLM to create fake or semi-fake documents. He said scholars should be wary of journals or funders who rely on LLM for peer reviewers.
