With a dominant performance, Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas beat American John Isner 6-3 6-2 on Wednesday to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Mexican Open tennis tournament.
Tsitsipas, 22, the world number five, killed veteran Isner in just 57 minutes and will now face Canadian promise Felix Auger-Aliassim, who beat American Sebastian Korda 6-3 6-4.
The Greek tennis player, number one in Acapulco, reached the quarter-finals of the fourth consecutive tournament in 2021. He has already done so in Marseille, Rotterdam and Australia.
Isner, the 35-year-old and world-ranked 27th veteran, was looking to reach the next round of the tournament as he reached the semi-finals in 2019 and 2020.
20-year-old Oger Aliassim, number 18 in the world ranking, reached the quarter-finals of this tournament for the first time in his career, and reached this stage for the second time this season, after reaching the final in Melbourne.
Tsitsipas is tough on the tour, I feel he brings out my best and I’m doing his best, if I have to play against him it will be a challenge and if he is Isner, I really lost to him a couple years ago, but I hope I can beat him and move on, ” Al Kindy said.
Mexico’s second favorite is German Alexander Zverev, who beat Serbia’s Laslo Djeri 6-4 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Mexico Open for the third time in his career.
World number 7 Zverev, 23, beat a faltering start to defeat Derry, the fighter in just over an hour and a half, who is having a good time on the ATP tour.
Zverev said that at first he was able to easily win the first set because I wasn’t playing my best. The longer the match lasts, the better I can start playing and get out of it. It’s good to know that even when I run into problems I can win.
The German, the second seed in Mexico, will face Dane Casper Rudd, who defeated Dutchman Talon Griksbourg 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Zverev, who reached the US Open Finals last year, is now 10-3 in the Mexican resort of Acapulco, reaching the final in 2019 and reaching the semi-finals in 2018.
Zverev added: He is someone who is advancing rapidly in the classification, and he is coming and has improved a lot on hard court, before performing better on clay, but now he has shown his ability to compete.
Djeri, 25, ranked 54th in the world, had just reached the quarter-finals in Santiago and Buenos Aires.
In another result, the Italian Lorenzo Musetti came back from behind and made a surprise for the second day in a row, beating American Frances Tiafo 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Mussetti, who on the eve of Argentine Diego Schwartzman, ninth in the world, fell very soon and it seemed that his surprise from the first round would remain just a tale, but he responded by taking the next two sets against Tiavo, ranked 56th in the ranking.
Now, the Italian, who is 120th in the world rankings, will face Bulgarian Gregor Dimitrov, the fifth seed, who had no problems beating Serbia’s Myomir Kikmanovic 6-4 6-2.
The 19-year-old Musetti presented similar surprises at the Roma Masters last year by knocking out, as now, the qualifiers to defeat Stan Wawrinka and K Nishikori.
In another result, the German stunned Dominic Kupfer and advanced to the next round with a 6-4 6-2 win over Canadian fourth seed Milos Raonic.
Kupffer, ranked 71 in the world, will face the winner of the match between Britain’s Cameron Noori and Italian Fabio Funini.
The Mexico Open is held on the hard deck of the Mextenis complex in the port of Acapulco and distributes a $ 1.2 million portfolio.
