The World Cup for Artistic Gymnastics next May in Japan has been canceled

The Technical Gymnastics World Cup that was to be held on May 4 in Japan has been canceled as announced today by the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) due to the current restrictions being introduced around the world due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The competition was to be held in Tokyo, the venue for the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games from July 23 to August 8, and will be taken as a test before the major event that was already postponed last year due to the pandemic.

He said that the decision was adopted by FIFA and the Japan Federation, “in light of the current travel restrictions, the difficulties at the global level, and the measures taken by the Japanese authorities to reduce the infection with the Coronavirus in the country before the games.” An international body in a statement.

In making the decision, it was also taken into account that after the World Cup was canceled in Stuttgart (Germany) and Birmingham (UK), FIFA has already removed the trophy circuit from the list of qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games.

The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee said in a separate statement that the World Cup will now be replaced by another nationwide competition as logistical preparation for the Games.

Games officials also affirmed their commitment to organizing “safe games in cooperation with all concerned parties.” (Telam)
