London, March 26 (EFE). The UK government will donate an emergency shipment of food worth £2 million (€2.4 million) to be sent to areas besieged by Russian forces in Ukraine, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said on Sunday. Friday.

Truss noted that the donation responds to a direct request from the Ukrainian government and will mainly include non-perishable dry foods, canned goods and water.

The goods will be shipped to warehouses in Poland and Slovakia, which will be supplied by the Ukrainian government early next week, in coordination with the United Nations and the Red Cross.

The memo said that “about 25 trucks will transport them by road and rail to local Ukrainian communities in greatest need.”

The ministry estimates that more than twelve million people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance in Ukraine and notes that this rapid donation is “essential” to reach people in vulnerable places, before doing so becomes more difficult.

“Our teams are working day and night with our Polish and Slovak friends and with the Ukrainian government to ensure those who need them most have access to essential supplies,” Truss said.

This donation is among the 400 million pounds (480 million euros) pledged by the United Kingdom to help the former Soviet Union, of which 220 million pounds (263 million euros) is earmarked for humanitarian aid.

Of these 220 million, it was announced today that 25 million (€30 million) will go to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in order to support neighboring countries receiving refugees from conflict.

An additional 10 million euros (12 million euros) has been donated to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to provide medical care, water supply, sanitation and hygiene, the government statement said. EFE
