The postcard that took 30 years to get from Chile to its recipient in the UK

It has been 30 years since the letter sent from South America in 1991 finally reached its destination.

Neil Crocker, who had been serving in the British Royal Navy, was returning from the Malvinas/Falkland Islands aboard the frigate HMS Cumberland, and during his layover in Chile he sent a postcard to his father-in-law.

Earlier this week, the card finally fell on the squeegee of his father-in-law’s home on the Island of Portland, England.

Crocker said he was “surprised” to see her three decades later.

The ship he was traveling on was returning from a three-month Malvinas/Falklands voyage with a five-day layover. Valparaiso, on the Chilean coast.

Crocker said he “vaguely” remembers writing and sending the card, commenting that “the weather and the beaches are beautiful.”
