Snapchat, the social network popular with young people, reported Thursday that it has 500 million monthly active users, at a time of growth in different parts of the world.
The platform, which expanded its offerings beyond its original ephemeral messages, had never announced a monthly active user number, but last month it said it had 280 million daily active users.
“We have now reached more than 500 million monthly active users, and nearly one in two US smartphone users is on Snapchat,” CEO Evan Spiegel said at the opening of the Snap Partner Summit, the parent company of the network.

Known for its fading messaging, Snapchat has expanded its partnerships with a variety of media companies including games, news, entertainment, and sports highlights.
It is also known for its augmented reality features that allow users to share their content and shop while almost testing items.
The company unveiled a series of new partnerships on Thursday, including one with the dating app Bumble, which allows users to share content made with Snapchat’s augmented reality technology.
