Science.-China manages gasoline production from hydrogenation of carbon dioxide – Publimetro México

Madrid, 8 (European press)

The first experimental device to produce 1000 tons/year of gasoline from carbon dioxide hydrogenation has completed its technology evaluation and trial operation.

Located in Zoucheng Industrial Park in China, it was jointly developed by the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Zhuhai Futian Energy Technology.

The hydrogenation of carbon dioxide into liquid fuels and chemicals can not only realize the use of carbon dioxide resources, but also facilitate the storage and transportation of renewable energy.

However, the activation and selective conversion of CO are challenging. Technology that can selectively produce energy-dense, value-added hydrocarbon fuels will provide a new path to furthering the low-carbon clean energy revolution.

DICP scientists proposed the technology to hydrogenate carbon dioxide into benzene in 2017, with a paper published in Nature Communications.

The pilot device at Zoucheng Industrial Park was completed in 2020. In October 2021, the device passed the 72-hour continuous on-site evaluation organized by the China Federation of Petroleum and Chemical Industries (CPCIF). It can achieve 95% carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide conversion, and 85% gasoline selectivity in all carbon-based products, while reducing the consumption of carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide feedstock.

It produced a clean and green gasoline product with an octane number above 90 according to the Chinese standard, accompanied by low energy consumption throughout the process.

“This technology represents a new stage in the technology for the use of carbon dioxide resources in the world and provides a new strategy for achieving the goal of carbon neutrality,” Professor Sun Jian, the first author of the research, said in a statement.
