On Monday, the Hollywood Academy announced some modifications to the rules Oscar and the regulations for film promotions that will govern the 97th edition of these awards, which focus primarily on new viewing requirements in physical cinemas.

According to the organization's statement, cinemas will no longer be a valid medium for showing films that aspire to win the award. This measure was taken during the coronavirus emergency in 2020, when traditional cinemas were closed due to the pandemic. .

Instead, Oscar-nominated feature films will only be eligible if they were released in theaters between January 1 and December 31 of this year and ran for at least seven days (continuous or not) in theaters in US cities such as Los Angeles. New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Bay Area and Dallas/Fort Worth, which have been added to this edition's list.

In the case of Best Picture nominees, they will also have to adhere to viewing requirements announced in 2023 that include an additional seven days of screening in at least ten of the top fifty U.S. markets. The next 45 days of its initial release.

In addition, projects that will be released at the end of this year and whose release plans are planned after January 10, 2025, must receive Academy verification and complete expanded exhibition in non-public theaters later than January 24.

Other important changes have been announced for the 97th edition, which will take place on March 2, 2025, and falls under the Best Soundtrack category.

Unlike previous years in which principal composers had to appear as a group and receive only one award, the Academy will now award up to three individual statuettes if they all contribute fully to the score.

Likewise, lists of Oscar pre-nominees — the so-called “shortlist” — in this category will range from 15 to 20 titles.

In addition, animated feature films competing for the Best International Film award may also covet the Best Animated Feature award if they meet the specific requirements of both sections.

Unlike other films, the new eligibility period for the International Feature Film category is from November 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.

On the other hand, to be considered for the Best Adapted Screenplay or Best Original Screenplay category, writers will have to submit a final filming script.

Changes to other Oscars

The Hollywood Academy also announced changes to awards such as the Governors Awards, where the Irving G. The Thalberg Memorial to the creative producer “whose works reflect a consistently high quality in film production”, in the form of an Oscar statuette rather than a bust with the head of the MGM production chief who gives the award its title.

On the other hand, they have renamed two of the special awards given in the Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards: the Gordon E. Sawyer Award, which will now be called the Scientific and Technical Achievement Award; The John A. Bonner Award has been renamed the Scientific and Technical Service Award.

The 97th edition of the Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles (California, USA), and the nominees for this edition will be announced on January 17.
