The Academy responsible for selecting the nominated films and awarding the awards published, Tuesday, December 21, a preliminary list of 15 films that could receive a nomination in the Best Foreign Film category.

The Mexican film “Noche de fuego,” with its English title “Prayers for the Loot,” is one of two Latin American films on the Academy’s shortlist, along with 10 European and three Asian titles.

Noche de fuego was presented at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where director Tatiana Uezo received a standing ovation for 10 minutes after the screening.

The film depicts the transition from childhood to adolescence of three girls in a marginalized, violent area of ​​Mexico where the film’s protagonists suffer the disappearance of one of their childhood friends, so their families must protect them so that the same does not happen to them. .

Noche de fuego received special mention from the jury at Cannes and was selected as the best Latin American film at the San Sebastian Film Festival. In the awards season that served as a precursor to the Oscars, the film earned nominations at the Satellite Awards and Independent Spirit Awards in the Best Foreign or Foreign Language Film categories.

Last year, “I’m Not Here Anymore” appeared on the shortlist for the category, but was not nominated. In the Best Foreign Language Film category, the only Mexican film to win the award is “Roma” for the film Alfonso Cuaron.

Another Latin American movie that could make it to the Oscars

The second Latin American film to appear on the list is Panama’s Plaza Catedral, directed by Abner Benaim, and starring Mexican actress Elsie Salas, as well as Colombian Manolo Cardona, who has developed his career in Mexico in recent years.

“Noche de fuego” is available on Netflix, but there is no release date for “Plaza Catedral” in Mexico or the United States. This is the full preliminary list of foreign language films that could be nominated for the Oscars 2022:
