In an effort to gain access to the metaverse, the parent company of Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram, Meta, has decided to introduce the “AI Research SuperCluster” (RSC), A supercomputer with artificial intelligence is according to them among the fastest computers in the world today.

This was announced by Meta to Infobae, stating that the goal of the said project is to assist AI investigations to build better learning models that allow translation of hundreds of languages, efficient text analysis, and image, text and video processing. same timeOr, in addition to developing better augmented reality tools for creating the metaverse, among other things.

CSR is important for creating the world proposed by Meta. A decisive role will be played by applications and products based on artificial intelligence, as the high processing power will allow many tools to work efficiently, and among them is the identification of harmful content.

Why do you need AI so big?

According to Meta, since 2013 the company has been developing artificial intelligence models using algorithms that can learn a large number of examples “that allow you to think more effectively by focusing on certain areas of your total data entry.. To fully reap the benefits of advanced AI, areas such as vision, speech and language will require training on larger and more complex models.‘, a reason that led them to build RSC.

Today, when it comes to the speed of this supercomputer, there are 1,895,000 teraflops (or 1,895 exaflops) of the TensorFloat-32 or TF32, a new math method from NVIDIA. It is estimated to reach a figure of less than 5 exaflops (a term used in computing to measure the computing power of a CPU or GPU) by mid-2022.

To give a general idea of the scale, if 1 exaflop is said to be traveling then 1 exaflop is traveling at the speed of light. In comparison, the speed of a supercomputer, once its construction is completed, will be more than 100,000 desktop computers. Permutation is a unit used to measure the performance of a computer.

“Our researchers will be able to train the larger models needed to develop advanced AI models for computer vision, natural language processing (NLP), speech recognition, and more. We hope that RSC will help us build entirely new AI systems that can, for example, run voice translations in real time for large groups of people, each speaking a different language, so they can seamlessly collaborate on a research project or play an augmented reality game together,” the company explained in a statement.

Ultimately, the work done with RSC will lead the way in creating technologies for the next great computing platform: the metaverse.

Although it should be noted that the Meta supercomputer is not the only one in the world, an example is the IBM Summit, a large computer that occupies more than 500 square meters and weighs about 340,000 kilograms.

At the moment, it is not known the final dimensions or those of the Meta supercomputer or what materials or infrastructure it will use to be considered the fastest in the world, although what is really important are the applications that are finally presented to it, with the metaverse being its main focus. As the company itself said, it will allow real-time communication, and thus is an important step for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences and could even have an application in the world of video games.
