Leclerc elected driver of the day at the 2022 F1 Canadian Grand Prix

Charles climbed from the penultimate position to the fifth

He had to handle traffic and manage tires very well

Charles Leclerc made an amazing comeback at the Canadian Grand Prix by climbing from penultimate position on the grid to fifth. Monegasque was also honored with fan appreciation for the driver of the day.

Leclerc started the weekend with a motor change that promptly pushed him to the back of the grid. Today he started the race from 19th place, forced back to avoid losing too much ground with Max Verstappen. Finally, he finished fifth and was dubbed the Driver of the Day by fans.

He started his comeback in the first few meters and by lap 20 he was already in the Top 10. He had to manage his hard tires and deal with the traffic as he got frustrated behind Esteban Ocon. Ferrari asked him if he wanted to go to Plan D and left it to the team’s discretion, as he was unable to beat the Frenchman.

Charles stopped his podium on lap 42, with a simple error by the mechanics putting him back on track in traffic. He got on the middle tire in the latter part of the race and then got lucky to start the safety car. This allowed him to beat Fernando Alonso and Ocon, despite the fact that the Alps were running on newer tyres.

Finally, Leclerc crossed the finish line in fifth place. With the 25 points Verstappen added today, the distance between them in the tournament increases to 49 points. He is not happy with the result, but knows that it is the best that he can achieve.

“I was never satisfied when I finished fifth, but looking at where we started, stopping and that problem we had with the front lever, I couldn’t have done better. The fifth was the best he could get today. “It was very difficult for me to do anything,” he told DAZN F1.
