Friends: The Reunion breaks UK viewership record

One of the most popular sitcoms over the years is Friends, which has also managed to survive 27 years after its premiere. One of the reasons this series is still on the public mind is because it brings to the table problems or situations that still matter to today’s youth, and raises questions about independence, starting a working life or taking the next step in a relationship.

Each character’s development has set an important guide when it comes to modern comedy. Indirectly, it continues with the family formula, however, it does so from the perspective of a group of friends, or as it is colloquially called, “the family one chooses.” Created by Marta Kaufman and David Crane, the series ran for 10 years, from 1994 to 2004, and saw films from the most popular actors of the day such as Robin Williams, Brad Pitt, Ben Stiller, and even Gary Oldman.

Since HBO Max isn’t available worldwide yet, places like the UK have opted to air the show at a specific time on Sky and Sky One at 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Reported to be close to matching Game of Thrones – 98% as the biggest and most watched event on Sky for at least the last two years. In the United States, the show was seen in about 29% of households, and on the day of its premiere its audience was only 3% less than Wonder Woman 1984 – 76%. It is worth noting that the United Kingdom was one of the most popular places for the original series, with only 8.6 million people watching the last episode of it at the time.

According to reception studies, the most watched and commented episode during the broadcast was Ross’ Wedding, where he said Rachel’s name in his wedding vows. Friends: reunion Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston, with James Corden as host. The program brought revival of some scenes, reading of scripts, and the presence of distinguished guests.
