Ford and Hermes reinforce the last mile in the UK

Ford is working in concert with European delivery company Hermes to test a courier service that can reduce the impact of package deliveries, with an innovative approach designed to help protect the environment.

With an initial focus on London, Ford and Hermes will explore the possibility of expanding the pilot project to other parts of the UK.

Through Ford’s smart MoDe: Link program, delivery trucks coordinate with courier teams, locating safe station operators within walking distance of delivery addresses, so that the last stop of the journey is on foot from that location.

Delivery men use an app on their smartphones that indicates the location of the truck and shows them the best and cheapest way to deliver packages. The app is integrated with tracking systems Hermes, Allowing customers to get instant visibility into the status of their deliveries.

This initiative aims to combat air pollution and reduce congestion on the roads with more efficient use of units on the streets.

“Being smarter in the way we deliver packages in the future will allow carriers to operate sustainably and efficiently, while providing a better customer experience.

Our tests with Hermes have shown that multi-modal deliveries can be scalable and efficient, even at the busiest time of the year, said Tom Thompson, Project Manager, stronghold Mobility.
