WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (EFE): The Canadian Armed Forces confirmed Wednesday that it is aware of efforts by Chinese authorities to spy on its soil, after the country’s media reported that the military found Chinese buoys in the Arctic last fall.
“The Canadian Armed Forces are fully aware of China’s efforts to conduct reconnaissance operations in Canadian airspace and sea,” a Department of Defense spokesperson said in a statement carried by local media.
The spokesperson further explained that Canada had stopped several attempts to spy on its soil since 2022, though he did not provide further details.
Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand confirmed shortly after in a press conference that the military had found and disposed of these buoys in the Arctic, adding that the situation was “not new”.
On February 4, the US government shot down a Chinese airship over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina, and after this event, it shot down three more flying objects in its territory and Canada, which for the time being did not. I was able to confirm its origin.
The event sparked debate in North America about the espionage activities of the Chinese authorities, and focused on the West’s efforts to prevent it. EFE
